What Is the Difference Between SCORM and xAPI?
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) and xAPI (Experience API) are two different e-learning standards for tracking and managing digital course content. Both enable data exchange between learning management systems (LMS) and course content, but they differ in how they work and what they offer.
SCORM is a classic standard that has been in use for many years. It can track whether users have completed a piece of content, what score they got on a test or how much time they spent. However, for SCORM to work, the content must be opened inside an LMS, and it cannot track offline learning experiences.
xAPI, on the other hand, is a more flexible system. Learning can happen not only inside an LMS but also in mobile apps, simulations and even face-to-face events, and all of these experiences can be recorded. The data is collected in systems called an LRS (Learning Record Store).
In conclusion, SCORM has a more traditional and limited structure, while xAPI is far more flexible and comprehensive. You should choose based on your organization’s needs.
