Floods are a disaster that causes loss of life and property in our country almost every year. This course begins by explaining types of flooding such as flash floods and river floods, why the power of flowing water should never be underestimated and in which situations fatalities are concentrated. It then has you practice life-saving decisions at every stage, from the moment a warning is issued to the aftermath of a flood, through scenarios.
Course objective: Help participants assess flood risk accurately, recognize risky behaviors and places and make safe decisions for themselves, their families and their coworkers during a flood.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
– Distinguish safer behaviors from risky ones,
– Understand the importance of following official sources when a warning is issued, being cautious about unverified posts and staying away from basements and underground parking garages,
– Apply the steps of moving upstairs, staying visible and giving clear information to the 112 emergency line when water is rising at home,
– Choose the right behavior for your role at work and at school,
– Know how to act on flooded roads, in a vehicle and in open areas near streambeds,
– Prepare a flood plan for your family that includes warning sources, an emergency kit and a meeting point.
The course begins with an introductory animation that opens with a real flood event. It progresses through a safe-or-risky sorting activity, scenarios on the moment of warning and being trapped at home, and sections on the workplace and school and on roads and open areas. It continues with a personal flood plan activity and concludes with knowledge check questions.
